Kimberley – Two men have been arrested in Kimberley, Northern Cape, after a video went viral on social media, which shows the pair resisting arrest and assaulting a female police officer.
In the video, a shirtless suspect who had been placed in the police vehicle can be seen trying to force his way out, while another man joined in and assaulted the female constable.
The agitated and aggressive man had been arrested during a routine police crime prevention operation.
The fracas in the central business district attracted onlookers, but they did not assist the female police officer.
Fortunately, police backup arrived, and both men who assaulted the female police officer were handcuffed and taken away, with onlookers cheering.
The female constable sustained minor injuries and received medical attention.
She also attended counselling and debriefing sessions from the police employee health and wellness unit experts.
Commenting on the viral video on Monday, 6 October 2025, South African Police Service Northern Cape Commissioner Lieutenant General Koliswa Otola “strongly condemned the attack on a female police Constable during crime prevention duties in the Kimberley CBD”.
Lieutenant General Otola added, “No one is above the law.
“Those who attack our officers will face the full might of the law.
“An attack on police officials is a direct attack on the State.”
Police spokesperson Brigadier Mashay Gamieldien said the arrested pair face several charges related to assaulting a police official, resisting arrest, defeating the ends of justice, and malicious damage to property.
