Polokwane – A teenage father arrested for assaulting his partner and beating to death their five-month-old son during a violent domestic row has appeared in court.
Eighteen-year-old Vongani Hlungwani appeared before the Malamulele Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, 9 October 2025.
The suspect allegedly murdered his baby boy at Jimmy Jones Village, Limpopo, on Tuesday morning, 7 October 2025.
After an intensive investigation by the local detectives, the suspect was tracked down and arrested later the same day, at about 22:00.
Recouting events leading to the discovery of the child’s body, Limpopo police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba said: “According to reports, the child’s mother arrived at Malamulele Police Station to report a case of domestic violence after she was allegedly assaulted by her boyfriend, who is also the father of the deceased infant”.
While lodging the complaint, the woman informed police that the suspect had repeatedly assaulted their baby.
“Fearing for her safety, she fled the house, leaving the child behind with the suspect,” said Colonel Ledwaba.
“Police immediately accompanied her to the residence.
“Upon arrival, they were met with a gruesome discovery — the lifeless body of the infant lying on the floor.”
Colonel Ledwaba said preliminary investigations revealed that the baby had sustained visible injuries to the head and face, suggesting that he was severely assaulted before succumbing to his injuries.
The accused Hlungwani was remanded in custody until 16 October 2025 for a bail application.
