Johannesburg – The search for a police sergeant attached to the Protection Security Services, wanted for the weekend murder of a policewoman and wounding his wife, ended in more tragedy after the fugitive took his own life.
The 53-year-old police sergeant from Riba Cross, Burgersfort, Limpopo, took his own life after being cornered by police along the R555 road on Sunday, 12 October 2025.
The R555 connects Springs with Ohrigstad via Delmas, Ogies, Witbank, Middelburg, Stoffberg, and Burgersfort.
It is alleged that on Saturday, 11 October 2025, the 53-year-old sergeant fatally shot a female police sergeant in Pretoria.
The next morning, the sergeant shot and wounded his wife in Bronkhorstspruit, Gauteng, before fleeing.
Narrating events regarding the search for the sergeant, police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba said: “Following intelligence about his movements, Limpopo police intercepted the white Nissan vehicle he was driving.
“The suspect allegedly fired a shot towards police officers and, when cornered, turned the firearm on himself.
“The firearm used was confirmed to be a state-issued service pistol.”
The sergeant, who has not been named, shot himself near Burgersfort.
Commenting on the tragedy, Limpopo police commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe said: “This tragedy once again highlights the urgent need for members to seek help when facing personal difficulties.
“We remain committed to supporting the well-being of our members while upholding the rule of law.”
Colonel Ledwaba stated that an inquest case has been opened, and the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) has been informed about the tragic shooting incidents.
IPID investigates deaths, rape, torture, and assault by police officers.
