Vienna – Participants in the first International Symposium on Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Nuclear Energy, organised by the IAEA, have committed to further developing cooperation.

The two-day International Symposium on AI and Nuclear Energy was held on 3 and 4 December 2025 in Vienna.

In the speech at the opening of the forum, Rosatom Director General Alexey Likhachev noted that the development of AI is of paramount importance as a key factor of technological progress in Russia.

He presented to participants of the event the experience of systematic and integrated application of AI technologies in the nuclear industry.

This experience, best practices, and achievements of Rosatom in the field of AI were demonstrated at the Russian exhibition booth, organised on the sidelines of the symposium.

Rosatom Director of Information and Digital Technologies Evgeny Abakumov, speaking at the booth, emphasisied that Rosatom’s experience covers the use of predictive analytics, machine vision, large language models, and other AI tools to solve problems of high complexity.

Today, AI-driven data centres are concentrated in a limited number of hubs.

However, a rapid global response to the development of AI is changing the map.

New digital corridors are expected to appear in new regions, including Africa.

Africa’s digital adoption is growing rapidly, exceeding the global average. However, its data centre capacity is still under one percent globally.

Kenya, Nigeria, Egypt, and South Africa are becoming vital digital hubs, with South Africa already accounting for over half of Africa’s data centre capacity.

Potential new AI-driven data centres in Africa will require reliable energy sources.

Through a commitment to expanding reliable energy, Africa can build a digital presence to support its fast-growing economies and populations.
