Polokwane – Three people were fatally struck by lightning while attending an all-night church service in Senwabarwana, Limpopo.

Police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba said the tragedy occurred in the early hours of Sunday, 14 December 2025, during heavy rains.

He said congregants were singing inside a tent erected in an open field when lightning struck, killing three worshipers, 46-year-old Ribson Mothemane and two females, 44-year-old Mosibudi Mokgobu and 36-year-old Glenda Modjadji Ntjana.

At least five other worshipers, all of them residents of Sefihlampyana village, were injured and taken to a local hospital.

Commenting on the tragedy, Provincial Police Commissioner of Limpopo, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, said she was “deeply saddened” by the untimely death of three churchgoers.

“I encourage members of the community to take precautionary measures, especially during this rainy season,” said Lieutenant General Hadebe.

An Inquest case has been registered for further investigations.
