Masoyi – A 33-year-old DJ who stopped playing his set at a tavern while revellers still wanted to dance has been shot dead as he packed away his equipment.

The Christmas Eve bash in Mpumalanga turned bloody when DJ Mdu Ngoma turned off the music and began packing away his equipment at around 11:30 pm, just before the tavern’s trading hours closed.

With revellers at the tavern in Mganduzweni Trust, near Masoyi, Mpumalanga, demanding more music, shots were fired.

DJ Mdu Ngoma was struck before the gunman turned his weapon on himself.

Mpumalanga police spokesperson Brigadier Donald Mdhluli said both men were declared dead on the spot.

The dead gunman has since been identified as 28-year-old  Swarelo Sibiya.

Brigadier Mdhluli said the firearm that went missing from the scene was later found in possession of the two suspects, aged 21 and 28.

Both suspects were arrested in Masoyi today, Christmas Day, 25 December 2025.

Brigadier Mdhluli said an inquest would be conducted.
