KZN: Policeman, Firefighter, Paramedic, Teachers Among ‘Drunk Drivers’ Nabbed

More than 2 600 motorists have been arrested since 15 August 2025 for driving under the influence of alcohol

Durban – A 74-year-old driver, a policeman, a firefighter, a paramedic, and two teachers were among the drivers arrested for “drunk driving” on Boxing Day.

At least nine of the arrested drivers were women.

KwaZulu-Natal Transport and Human Settlements MEC Siboniso Duma said more than 2 600 motorists have been arrested since 15 August 2025.

“The level of commitment displayed by our highly energised team from the Road Traffic Inspectorate is unmatched,” stated MEC Duma.

“The people of KwaZulu-Natal are encouraged by this loyalty to serve this province by RTI [Road Traffic Inspectorate].

“We offer to sustain #NenzaniLaEzweni Operation until Easter and beyond.”

MEC Duma also thanked the traffic officers from Ray Nkonyeni Local Municipality, KwaDukuza Local Municipality, as well as the SA Police Service.

“We salute the National Traffic Police for augmenting #NenzaniLaEzweni Operatio,” he said.

The breakdown of Boxing Day arrests for driving under the influence of alchol were as follows:

Margate in Port Shepstone – 38 motorists arrested for drunk driving

  • 74-year-old driver
  • 9 females and 29 males

Newcastle – 32 Motorists arrested

  • Policeman
  • Firefighter
  • Paramedic
  • 2 teachers

Groutville in Stanger – 32 motorists arrested for drunk driving

  • Oldest driver – 65 years
