Polokwane – The suspect arrested in connection with the Saulsville tavern mass shooting has appeared in a separate matter before the Polokwane Magistrate’s Court on a charge of unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition.

On Tuesday, 30 December 2025, the suspect, who can not be named pending an identity parade, abandoned his bail application in the Limpopo firearm matter when he appeared in court.

The 32-year-old suspect was arrested after brandishing his gun in public at a liquor outlet in Ga-Motodi Village, Limpopo.

While he was in custody, police realised that he was a person of interest in the Saulsville tavern mass shooting.

Police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe said the matter has been postponed to 19 February 2026.

The accused was remanded in custody.

“Tomorrow, [Wednesday, 31 December 2025], he will appear [in court] again in Atteridgeville, where he is facing 12 counts of murder and 13 counts of attempted murder,” said Brigadier Mathe.

Earlier this month, on 6 December 2025, three gunmen stormed an illegal tavern inside a hostel and opened fire, killing 12 people, including three children.

Thirteen others were injured and taken to Kalafong Hospital.

The police have since confirmed that a gun found in possession of the suspect when he was arrested in Limpopo had been linked through ballistic tests to the mass shooting on 6 December 2025.
