Johannesburg – The City of Johannesburg warns residents of a water supply disruption during Rand Water’s phase 3 maintenance.
The 54-hour maintenance at the Eikenhof Pump Station, implemented from today, Tuesday, 6 January 2026, will continue until Thursday, 8 January 2026.
The City said the maintenance was part of the essential upgrades to critical bulk water infrastructure.
“These improvements are necessary to enhance the long-term reliability and sustainability of water supply to parts of Johannesburg,” the City said when it announced the disruptions on Monday, 5 January 2026.
The Johannesburg Water systems expected to be impacted during this phase include:
- Roodepoort Deep Reservoir
- Fleurhof Reservoir
- Doornkop Reservoir
- Meadowlands Reservoirs 1 and 2, including direct feeds, and
- Braamfischer Reservoir
The City said that during maintenance, the volume of bulk water supplied to Johannesburg Water’s network will be significantly reduced.
“As a result, affected reservoirs will gradually deplete, and residents may experience low water pressure or outages,” the City said.
“After maintenance ends and pumping resumes on 8 January 2026, systems will not recover immediately.
“Johannesburg Water’s infrastructure will require at least seven days to stabilise and recover fully.”
The City said Johannesburg Water and Rand Water have implemented extensive operational and contingency plans to reduce the impact of this maintenance.
“Reservoir levels have been managed in advance, response teams are on standby, and alternative water will be supplied to affected communities through stationary and roaming tankers during both the maintenance and recovery periods,” the City said.
“We acknowledge the inconvenience this maintenance will cause to households, businesses, and institutions across Johannesburg.
“However, this work is essential to safeguarding the City’s long-term water security.
“We will continue to work with Rand Water and key stakeholders to manage this maintenance, prioritising our residents’ interests.”
