Schoemansdal – Mpumalanga police have uncovered a massive plantation of dagga in a secluded area of Buffelspruit Farm near Schoemansdal outside Malelane.

The illicit plants with an estimated street value of R2.9 million were found on Friday, 9 January 2026.

A large contingent of police led by the Acting Mpumalanga Police Commissioner Major General Zeph Mkhwanazi uprooted the dagga plants on the bank of the Mahlambanyatsi River.

However, no arrests were made.

Mpumalanga Police Spokesperson Brigadier Donald Mdhluli said the police were tipped off about the dagga field.

“According to a report, this discovery is a major one in the battle against drug trafficking,” Mdhluli said.

“The field consisted of mature marijuana (dagga) plants grown next to the Mhlambanyatsi River.

“The discovery has prompted an immediate investigation, and an enquiry has been opened with a hope to locate those who are responsible.”

He added: “As of now, the ones behind this large-scale cultivation have not yet been established.

“Police urge anyone with information that may assist in the ongoing investigation.”
