Cape Town – Table Mountain National Park (TMNP) says it has successfully contained a fire in the Bo-Kaap area.

SANParks spokesperson JP Louw said the fire broke out on private land in the evening of 18 January 2026, which later spread into the park.

“The fire was reported at approximately 21:40, and TMNP Fire Management immediately activated its emergency response protocols,” JP Louw said.

“Through a rapid and well-coordinated effort, the fire was contained by 23:00, preventing further spread and safeguarding surrounding communities and biodiversity.”

JP Louw said TMNP Fire Management worked alongside the Volunteer Wildfire Services and the City of Cape Town Fire and Rescue Service, demonstrating strong operational readiness and effective inter-agency collaboration.

Ground firefighting resources were strategically deployed to protect properties along the urban fringe, while systematic mopping-up operations commenced immediately thereafter to eliminate any remaining hotspots.

In anticipation of strong winds forecast for the afternoon, firefighting resources will remain on site throughout the day to continue monitoring and to conclude mopping-up operations, ensuring the area remains secure.

As a precautionary measure during active firefighting, Signal Hill Road was temporarily closed but has since been safely reopened to traffic.

“TMNP remains on high alert as the fire season continues and urges members of the public to exercise increased caution when visiting mountainous and protected areas,” JP Louw.

“Visitors are reminded to stay on designated routes and trails, adhere to official instructions, and respect any restricted areas to ensure personal safety and to support emergency response efforts.

“South African National Parks extends its sincere appreciation to all responding agencies for their swift action, professionalism, and continued vigilance.”
