Five Die In Horror Crash Between Bakkie And Tipper Truck Along N2 In Umtubatuba, KZN

Durban – Five people have died in a horrific collision between a bakkie and a tipper truck along the N2 in Umtubatuba, KwaZulu-Natal (KZN).

KZN Transport and Settlements MEC Siboniso Duma said the crash occurred on Friday, 30 January 2026.

“I have just received a report from the Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) informing me about another horrific accident that has claimed the lives of 5 people in Inkosi uMtubatuba Local Municipality,” said MEC Duma.

“According to the RTI report, a Corsa [Bakkie] and a tipper truck collided in Manandi along the N2, resulting in the death of four adults and one child.

“Two other people are reportedly seriously injured.”

MEC Duma added: “We wish to express our deepest condolences to the families of the victims.

“We wish those injured a speedy recovery.”

MEC Duma said the Road Traffic Inspectorate team was working with disaster teams from Inkosi uMtubatuba Local Municipality to speed up recovery efforts and to clear the accident scene.

“In addition, a team from my office will work flat out to ensure that we are closer to the families,” said MEC Duma.

“Finally, we have agreed with RTI that an investigation into this accident must be launched in collaboration with the Road Traffic Management Corporation and SA Police Service.”
