Durban – Armed robbers pounced on a vehicle carrying cash in a brazen heist along the N2, near Chesterville, outside Durban city.
ALS Paramedics spokesperson Garrith Jamieson said they were alerted at about 7 pm on Monday, 2 February 2026, about a violent cash-in-transit robbery that involved blasting open the vehicle.
The explosion left money scattered all over the ground, attracting hard-pressed people.
Jamieson said when paramedics arrived at the scene, they found hundreds of people picking up money from the ground.
He said members of the South African Police Service (SAPS) eventually dispersed the people from the crime scene.
Jamieson said paramedics examined the two guards who survived the blast.
“One of them had sustained minor to moderate injuries as a result of the explosion, and he was treated by ALS Paramedics,” Jamieson said.
“The entire N2 National Freeway has been closed off by SAPS and Metro Police to allow investigations to continue.”
No arrests were made, and the amount of cash stolen was not disclosed.
