Valentine’s Day CAF Clash: MC Alger Coach Rhulani Mokwena Denies Spying On Sundowns

Pretoria – Today, all roads lead to Loftus Versfeld where local favourites Mamelodi Sundowns take on visiting Algerian side MC Alger in a Group C do-or-die CAF Champions League qualifier.

MC Alger coach Rhulani Mokwena has come out guns blazing amid a spying controversy ahead of the must-win showdown.

Whichever team loses this afternoon will be out of the prestigious competition.

Rumours around the high-stakes game have surfaced that a Sundowns insider may have leaked the “Brazilians” tactics to MC Alger.

However, Mokwena, who previously coached Sundowns, has emphatically dismissed claims that he received inside tactical information from a supposed source at his former club.

As a result, Sundowns reportedly conducted an internal probe that led to the suspension of analyst Mario Masha.

The controversy has added spice to the highly anticipated Valentine’s Day clash.

A visibly angry Mokwena denied the claims at yesterday’s press conference, saying the material in question was information Masha had asked him to review while working toward his UEFA coaching licence late last year.

“Let me state this clearly. Mario has not given me any tactical or confidential information about Sundowns,” the MC Alger coach said.

“Our conversations were professional football discussions focused on coaching development.

“At no point were current plans shared with me.”

Mokwena added: “I would never ask anyone to compromise their integrity for competitive advantage.

“Our preparation is built on hard work, analysis, and professionalism, never shortcuts.”

In summary

I am worried that a good football club like Mamelodi Sundowns is now led by gossipers & rumor mongers

The allegations have intensified scrutiny on a fixture already loaded with far-reaching consequences.

The 15 times South African league champions desperately need an outright win against the Algerian giants to stay alive, while Mokwena’s side needs to only avoid defeat, a narrow margin that explains why emotions are running high.

With his job already seemingly on the line, elimination for Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso would deliver the final nail in the coffin to end his tenure at Chloorkop.

On the other hand, progression would validate MC Alger’s tactical project under Mokwena.

The spying narrative carries deeper emotional weight because Mokwena returns to the club that defined his coaching path to top African football clubs.

During his tenure, he guided Sundowns to three domestic league titles and the 2023 African Football League crown, forging a dominant identity that elevated both his reputation and the club’s continental standing.

Now he stands on the opposite bench with everything at stake: pride, progression, and professional credibility.

“Champions League football demands bravery. You suffer together, you fight together, and you earn every moment,” Mokwena said.

The 39-year-old coach has deep roots at Sundowns, rising from assistant to Pitso Mosimane to co-coach alongside Manqoba Mngqithi before eventually taking charge as head coach.

He departed the club in July 2024 for Moroccan giants Wydad Casablanca, before moving to MC Alger a year later.
