Cape Town – Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis has opened the upgraded Wesfleur Athletics Stadium in Atlantis
Upgraded for R31 million, the stadium, which now has a new running track, was opened on Wednesday, 25 February 2026.
Apart from the full replacement of the tartan running track, the upgrade included the revamping of the steeple chase arena, triple and long jump sections, hammer throw cage, javelin area, and floodlights.
Repairs were also made to seating areas, walkways, ablution blocks, and the spectator fence, alongside the installation of a new perimeter fence.
‘This upgrade is about far more than a new track — it’s about raising the standard of community facilities and ensuring spaces that residents can truly be proud of.
“The City has invested R31 million to deliver this high-quality athletics facility upgrade for Atlantis,” stated Mayor Hill-Lewis.
“Facilities like this play a critical role in building safer, healthier communities.
“When young people have access to well-maintained, inspiring spaces for sport and recreation, it creates positive alternatives and real pathways for growth.
“And we’re far from done – the work here is part of our commitment to better upgraded sports and community facilities across the city.”
The Wesfleur facility is also earmarked as a Regional Recreation Hub with further upgrades on the cards in the coming years.
“Facilities like Wesfleur Athletics Stadium play an important role in keeping young people active, safe and off the streets,” said the Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services and Health, Councillor Francine Higham.
“I want to thank the City officials and teams who worked to deliver and maintain this facility.
“This stadium belongs to the community, and I call on residents to use it, respect it, and protect it for generations to come.”
The Wesfleur Athletics stadium is one of various City facilities offering essential support to partners, including Western Province Athletics, the Western Cape Government, federations, clubs, and schools.
