Devon – There was joy and jubilation in Devon, Lesedi Local Municipality, Gauteng, where more than 100 newly built houses were handed over to new owners as part of the Impumelelo Mega Project.
Among the beneficiaries were 80-year-old Lina Mahlangu and 73-year-old Mary Motsoeneng, who had spent years living at the homes of kind relatives.
Now the pair are proud new homeowners, something they said brings joy, long-term security, and restores their dignity.
The handover of title deeds and houses on Friday, 27 February 2026, was led by Human Settlements Minister Thembi Simelane, together with Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi and MEC for Human Settlements Tasneem Motara, as part of the government’s commitment to providing adequate housing.
A total of 132 newly built housing units were handed over to qualifying households.
The Impumelelo Mega Project is expected to deliver 6 284 housing units.
“To date, 5 520 housing units have been completed, reflecting significant progress in accelerating sustainable human settlements and expanding access to housing opportunities,” stated the Department of Human Settlements.
