Pretoria – The Government Communication and Information System (GCIS) has expressed its “deep sadness” at the passing of veteran journalist, legendary author, and anti-apartheid struggle stalwart Terry Bell.

The family of the struggle stalwart announced his passing on Wednesday, 25 March 2026, at the age of 84.

Bell played an active and principled role in the struggle against apartheid, using both his voice and his writing to advance justice, expose inequality, and support the cause of democratic change in South Africa.

The GCIS stated that through Bell’s distinguished career in journalism and his contributions to books documenting labour struggles, political history, and the lived realities of working people, he helped preserve critical chapters of our nation’s journey to freedom.

“He left an indelible mark on the country and beyond its borders. Bell was pivotal in supporting international solidarity efforts against apartheid, including campaigns to boycott the Springboks and protests in New Zealand opposing apartheid policies in South Africa,” the GCIS said.

“Grounded firmly in his principles, his contribution in the Truth and Reconciliation process helped shine a light on heinous crimes of the past and contributed meaningfully to the nation’s pursuit of truth, justice, and reconciliation.

“As a valued stakeholder in the communication environment, the media sector continues to draw inspiration from his integrity, courage, and dedication to truth-telling and democratic accountability.”

The GCIS extended its sincere condolences to his family, friends, colleagues, and the media fraternity.

“His legacy will remain an enduring reminder of the important role of ethical journalism in strengthening our constitutional democracy,” the GCIS said.
