Polokwane – The African National Congress (ANC) in Limpopo has made history by electing, for the first time, a woman to lead the party in the province.

The 11th ANC provincial leadership elective conference at the Pietersburg Cricket Club in Polokwane over the weekend saw Limpopo Premier Dr. Pophi Ramathuba being elected unopposed as the party’s provincial chairperson.

The top five ANC elected officials include:

  • Dr Ramathuba (chairperson),
  • John Makoro Mpe (deputy chairperson),
  • Vhamusanda Reuben Madadzhe (secretary),
  • Pule Shayi (deputy secretary), and
  • Eddie Maila (treasurer).

Madadzhe managed to retain his position as the secretary. Dr Ramathuba is also the first female to occupy the position of premier in Limpopo.

Commenting on her election, Dr. Ramathuba said she was glad about her election and being the first female to occupy the highest position in the ANC provincial structure.

She had already been “specially” congratulated by her counterparts from other provinces.

Dr. Ramathuba’s election was seen as a uniting move ahead of the upcoming 2026 local government elections and beyond by enhancing the provision of viable services.
