Johannesburg – The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) has warned motorists of a major traffic disruption in Sandton following a shooting incident earlier this afternoon, Thursday, 9 April 2026.
The JMPD said Katherine Street was “currently closed to all traffic beneath the Grayston Drive overpass”.
JMPD spokesperson Superintendent Xolani Fihla explained that the area has been cordoned off to allow the South African Police Service (SAPS) and relevant authorities to process the crime scene.
There is a significant police presence on-site.
As we approach the afternoon peak hours, this closure is likely to cause severe delays on all surrounding routes, including:
- Katherine Street (Northbound and Southbound)
- Grayston Drive
- M1 Highway (Off-ramps at Grayston Drive)
- West Street and Rivonia Road
“JMPD officers are being deployed to assist with traffic control and to divert vehicles away from the scene,” the spokesperson said.
“Motorists are advised to exercise patience and follow officers’ instructions on the ground.”
To avoid congestion, motorists should consider using the following alternative routes:
- Marlboro Drive
- Sandton Drive
- Rivonia Road
- South Road
“The closure will remain until the crime scene has been cleared,” said Superintendent Fihla.
