Police Colonel Makhosandile Makara Accused Of Rape Granted R5 000 Bail

Cape Town – The Western Cape Protection and Security Services police colonel arrested for rape of a subordinate has been  granted bail of R5 000 by the Wynberg Magistrate’s Court.

The accused, named as 45 -year-old Colonel Makhosandile Makara, appeared in court today, Wednesday, 15 April 2026.

Allegations are that the colonel raped his 44-year-old female subordinate in May 2025.

Colonel Makara, who was arrested by the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) on Tuesday, 14 April 2926, has been granted bail with strict conditions.

Spokesperson Lizzy Suping​​​​​ said the court also ordered that the accused should contact the complainant.

Colonel Makara’s case has been remanded to 27 May 2026.

Commenting on the prevalence of similar offenses in the police, the Suping said, in terms of IPID’s Statistics, as at the end of March 2026, the number of rape cases was 116.  

The Eastern Cape registered the highest number of 22 cases, followed by Gauteng and the Western Cape with 21 cases each.

“To date, 65 cases have been concluded and referred to the DPP for a decision,” Suping stated.

“It is also worth noting that as at the end of March 2026, there have been notable criminal convictions and the sentences ranged from 8 years to 25 years direct imprisonment.”
