Durban – A car chase after a driver drove off to avoid a breathalyser test being administered by Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) officials led to the arrest of four suspects and the recovery of a huge amount of cash.

Narrating events that led to the arrests and recovery of the money,  KwaZulu-Natal Transport and Human Settlements MEC Siboniso Duma said RTI officials stopped a car that was being driven recklessly in Kokstad.

The RTI officials stopped the car, which was blasting loud music.

“Just before the administration of a breathalyser test, the driver sped off. His three accomplices jumped off the moving vehicle down the road,” recalled MEC Duma.

“The RTI gave chase and quickly cornered and arrested the driver.

“In the vehicle, they found expensive liquor and large sums of money.”

A businessman whose supermarket had just been robbed came forward and identified one of the suspects.

MEC Duma said the driver and the other suspects who alighted from the moving vehicle were arrested.

“We pause to commend RTI Kokstad, as law enforcement officers, for resisting the temptation to walk away with the large sums of money in return for the release of the motorist,” said MEC Duma.

“We are encouraged by the display of commitment to serve the people of KwaZulu-Natal with integrity.

“We are fixing the country, and we remain firm.

“We will remove reckless drivers and criminals from our road networks.”
