Lobamba –  Somhlolo National Stadium in Lobamba, Eswatini, on Friday 24 April 2026, was a hive of activity as the kingdom celebrated the 40th anniversary of King Mswati III’s reign.

The elaborate celebration, which coincided with the King’s 58th birthday anniversary, was attended by various dignitaries, heads of state, and monarchs.

Former South African President Jacob Zuma, Lesotho Monarch Letsie III, Zulu Monarch Misuzulu ka Zwelithini, Botswana President Duma Boko, Mozambican President Daniel Chopo, and Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa were among the attendees.

Addressing his guests, the Eswatini Monarch recalled how he ascended to the throne at the age of 18 in spite of it not being an easy task for him to deliver his first speech at the same stadium of this event.

King Mswati III said the 40-year journey of his reign was a milestone in history, not only for himself but also for the mountain kingdom with a population of about 1,3 million.

“On the first day of my address, things were not the same as they are today,” the King said.

“Today it marks 40 years, and through God’s grace and strength as well as your support, I’m proudly standing before you again.”

King Mswati III appealed to his subjects to remain proud of their roots and culture and preserve them.

He said he would continue to enhance the provision of services, including quality education.

“We have come this far together, and together we shall continue to build a future guided by unity, strengthened by tradition, and inspired by hope,” King Mswati III said.

“In unity is strength. Much has been accomplished, but much remains ahead of us.”

King Mswati III was installed in April 1986 after the passing of his polygamous father, King Sobhuza II, who had 70 wives, 210 children, and 1 000 grandchildren.

King Sobhuza II ruled for over 80-years from 1921 to 1982.

After his passing, there was a power struggle between regencies, including Queen Regent Dzeliwe, who ruled for a year from 1982, followed by a three-year reign of Queen Regent Ntombi.

King Mswati III ascended to the throne after that and has remained at the helm ever since.
