Johannesburg – In a fiery Soweto Derby at FNB Stadium on Sunday afternoon, Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs played out a pulsating 1-1 draw in front of a raucous 94 000-strong crowd.
The Betway Premiership clash lived up to its billing as one of South Africa’s fiercest rivalries, with end-to-end action, late drama, and plenty of passion, yet neither side could claim bragging rights or maximum points.
Chiefs struck first in the 62nd minute. Wandile Duba threaded a clever pass into the box, where Pule Mmodi finished calmly past Sipho Chaine to send the visiting supporters into ecstasy.
The goal capped a strong spell for Amakhosi, who had looked dangerous on the counter after weathering early Pirates pressure.
Buccaneers responded with urgency. Just 13 minutes later, substitute Kamogelo Sebelebele rose highest to power home a header from a precise cross, restoring parity at 1-1 in the 75th minute.
The equaliser ignited the home end and shifted momentum, but despite late surges from both teams, the scoreline remained unchanged.
