KuGompo City (East London) – Advocate Samkelo Callaway Mtwana has been appointed acting Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for the Eastern Cape Division.
This appointment was necessitated by the retirement of the current DPP for the Eastern Cape Division, Barry Madolo, who officially retired on Thursday, 30 April 2026.
Justice and Constitutional Development Minister Mmamoloko Kubayi made the appointment of Advocate Mtwana, in terms of section 13(3) of the National Prosecuting Authority Act, 1998 (Act No. 32 of 1998).

The Department of Justice and Constitutional Development stated that the appointment of Advocate Ntwana, who currently serves as Deputy DPP in the Eastern Cape Division, ensures continuity, stability, and effective leadership within the division during this transitional period.
“The process to appoint a permanent Director of Public Prosecutions is currently underway,” the department said in a statement.
“Minister Kubayi expressed her appreciation to Mr. Madolo for his dedicated service and contribution to the National Prosecuting Authority and the justice system.
