Durban – Unknown assailants have set fire to the uMbumbulu homestead of former Ukhozi FM DJ Ngizwe Mchunu, now the leader of the anti-immigrant group Amabhinca.
The self-styled cultural activist and social media commentator who hails from KwaZulu-Natal was away in Cape Town when his home was torched on Sunday, 10 May 2026.
Witnesses said a group of strange men arrived at the homestead looking for Mchunu.
Neighbours informed the group that Mchunu and his wife were not at home at the time.
Shortly afterwards, flames were seen coming from Mbhunu’s house, which was extensively damaged in the fire.
Nkosi Phakel’umthakathi Ndabandaba, who also participated in recent anti-immigrant marches alongside Mchunu, said no one was hurt in the fire.
He said the house and furniture were destroyed by the blaze.
Ndabandaba said he believes the attack was planned and claims it may be linked to the recent anti-immigrant march led by Mchunu and others.
He alleged that leaders associated with the anti-immigrant marches were now being targeted.
Some of the protests reportedly turned violent with unconfirmed claims of fatalities.
However, the SA government has urged caution as the matter, which has resulted in an outcry from other African countries, including Nigeria and Ghana, was still under investigation.
