By-Election Results: ANC Retains Seat And Wins Another, PA Unseats DA

Johannesburg – The Electoral Commission (IEC) has announced the results of by-elections held on Wednesday, 13 May 2026, in the North West and Northern Cape provinces.

In a terse statement on Thursday, 14 May 2026, the IEC stated the African National Congress (ANC) retained the seat it held in the 2021 Municipal Elections in North West, and also won a seat in the Siyathemba Municipality, Northern Cape.

The Patriotic Alliance (PA) won a seat previously held by the Democratic Alliance (DA) in the Dawid Kruiper Municipality.

The IEC stated that the new councillors were:  

North West

The new ANC Councillor is:

• Fortunate Lehlohonolo Mahogen in Ward 20 in the Matlosana Municipality, NW403.

The party retained the seat it won in the 2021 Municipal Elections with 81.03% of the total votes cast, compared to 72.01% in the 2021 Municipal Elections.

Voter turnout was 33.71%.

Northern Cape

The new ANC Councillor is:

• Franklin Vaughan Louw in Ward 02 in the Siyathemba Municipality, NC077.

The party won a seat previously held by the Siyathemba Community Movement in the 2021 Municipal Elections with 50.77% of the total votes cast, compared to 55.29% in the 2021 Municipal Elections.

Voter turnout was 57.16%.

Northern Cape

The new PA Councillor is:

• Christi-Ann Ntlanganiso in Ward 15 in the Dawid Kruiper Municipality, NC087.

The party won a seat previously held by the DA in the 2021 Municipal Elections with 37.53% of the total votes cast, compared to 46.95% in the 2021 Municipal Elections.

Voter turnout was 63.01%.
