IN HAPPIER TIMES: MKP leader, former president Jacob Zuma, and Nhlamulo Ndhlela before he was fired as party spokesperson

Durban – The uMkhonto weSizwe Party (MKP) has all but kicked out axed spokesperson Nhlamulo Ndhlela from the party led by former president Jacob Zuma.

A day after Ndhlela was removed from the spokesperson position, the MKP said it was suspending his membership of the party, removing him as an MP, and giving him seven days to return all its property in his possession.

Ndhlela was axed as MKP spokesperson after delivering a controversial media statement about the newly launched MK Institute, which he claimed would take full control of the party’s leadership structures.

The party’s leadership declared the statement “null and void” and said it was unconstitutional, leading to his immediate removal.

MKP National Chairperson Nkosinathi Nhleko, on Tuesday, 19 May 2026, wrote a letter to Ndhlela informing him of the sanctions.

“This letter serves to formally inform you that President Jacob Zuma has today taken the decision to suspend your membership of the party with immediate effect, pending the outcome of an investigation,” wrote Nhleko.

“This decision follows allegations of misconduct, sowing division and bringing the party into disrepute.”

The letter seen by The Bulrushes added: “Pending the outcome of the investigation, you are instructed to refrain from representing the party in any official capacity; not to access or operate any official MKP social media and public media, bank accounts, or digital platforms; and to return all party property, including but not limited to documents, devices, membership card, passwords, and access credentials, to the Office of the Secretary-General within seven days of this notice”.

Ndhlela, who was immediately replaced as MKP spokesperson by former editor of The Star newspaper, Sifisumusa Mahlangu, was yet to make a public statement about his situation.
