Mbombela (Nelspruit) – Eight people were killed on Tuesday morning, 16 June 2026, when a minibus taxi and a truck collided on the N4 Toll Road between Ngodwana and Waterval Onder, towards Waterval Boven.

One person sustained critical injuries.

The Mpumalanga Department of Community Safety, Security, and Liaison said the cause of the crash was unclear

“An investigation is currently underway at the scene. More details will be communicated in due course,” the department said in a terse statement.

Speaking to Newzroom Afrika TV (channel 405) at the scene, Mpumalanga Spokesperson for Community Safety, Security and Liaison, Moeti Mmusi, said the bodies were taken to a state morgue in Belfast.

Their next of kin would be notified to identify the deceased.

Mmusi said their preliminary investigation revealed that the minibus taxi was travelling from Mozambique to Johannesburg.

“The minibus taxi has a Mozambique-registered number plate,” the spokesperson said.

The truck was transporting goods to a retailer in Malelane, near Mbombela.
