Former president Jacob Zuma's uMkhonto weSizwe Party alleges some of its votes were wiped out during the IEC system outage last year

Johannesburg – The Electoral Court has concluded the hearing of the uMkhonto weSizwe Party’s (MKP) application to set aside the 2024 National and Provincial Election results.

The MKP is contesting election results because it alleges that a system outage during vote counting allowed millions of its votes to be “wiped out” or manipulated.

The Electoral Commission (IEC) rejects the MKP assertion and insists it was only a temporary technical glitch.

However, the party led by 84-year-old former president Jacob Zuma argues the lack of transparency undermines trust in the process.

On concluding the matter yesterday, Wednesday, 17 June 2026, the Johannesburg High Court reserved judgment.

Commenting on the matter, the IEC said it looks forward to the Electoral Court delivering judgment on the hearing.

“The Electoral Commission welcomes this development, as it brings a prolonged legal process closer to conclusion,” the IEC said in a statement made available to The Bulrushes.

Since the commencement of the case, the IEC said it has openly disclosed material evidence, including expert reports related to the results system, to assist the Court to adjudicate the matter.

“The disclosures illustrate that the NPE2024 results were not tampered with, and the elections were credible, free, and fair,” the statement said.

“We affirm our position that the election results reflected the democratic will of the people of South Africa.”

The IEC said it respects the authority and independence of the court and awaits the Court to consider the matter and issue a judgment.

“Accordingly, the Commission will not comment further on the merits of the matter while proceedings remain before the court.”

The IEC said its attention is primarily on operational and logistical arrangements for the voter registration weekend on 20–21 June 2026.

“We urge all eligible voters to register or verify their details to ensure they can take part in the upcoming elections. Get Up. Show Up. Vote.”

South Africa’s upcoming Local Government Elections will take place on 4 November 2026.
