Amersfoort – Five people died, and four others were seriously injured in a head-on collision involving two cars along the P97 Road in Mpumalanga.

The deadly crash occurred in the evening on Thursday, 25 June 2026, between Amersfoort and Perdekop.

The deceased, all males, included the drivers of both cars.

Mpumalanga Spokesperson for Community Safety, Security and Liaison Moeti Mmusi said: “The cause of the crash is under investigation; however, reckless and negligent driving cannot be ruled out.”

The Mpumalanga Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison recorded 75 road fatalities from crashes between 1 April and 31 May 2026.

“Our roads have become killing fields largely due to human behaviour,” lamented  Jackie Macie, the Mpumalanga MEC for Community Safety, Security and Liaison.

“We are appealing to all road users to respond positively to the government’s road safety messages to spare lives.

“We should also strengthen efforts to punish reckless driver behaviour to lend more credence to our road safety messages.”

MEC Macie conveyed sympathies to the grieving families and wished the injured a speedy recovery.
