Johannesburg – Rand Mutual Assurance (RMA) has signed a strategic partnership agreement with the Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF) aimed at strengthening workers’ compensation, occupational health and safety, and social insurance systems in Africa.
The agreement was concluded during a visit by an RMA delegation, led by the chief executive officer of its Insurance, Asset Management and Health division, Bilal Adam, to the NSITF headquarters in Abuja.
Commenting on the agreement today, Monday 6 July 2026, RMA said the partnership would focus on sharing expertise and exploring cooperation to develop modern, responsive compensation systems that protect workers while supporting productivity and economic development.
RMA Group CEO Mandla Shezi said the partnership builds on the company’s more than 130-year history in workers’ compensation and reflects its strategy of expanding collaboration across the continent.
“For RMA, this partnership is a natural extension of a legacy that spans more than 130 years,” Shezi said, adding that the company had evolved from serving the mining sector into a broader social insurer focused on prevention, rehabilitation and care.
He said changing workplace dynamics, technological advances and emerging occupational risks made collaboration between institutions increasingly important.
“As the world of work transforms, no institution can advance alone,” Shezi stated.
“Partnerships such as this enable us to learn from one another, strengthen our systems, and accelerate progress in ways that benefit workers, employers and national economies.”
RMA said it would work with NSITF to identify areas of mutual benefit, including strengthening compensation systems and promoting occupational health and safety.
The insurer said the agreement also reflects its commitment to supporting stronger social protection systems across Africa through knowledge sharing and the adoption of best practice.
Shezi said the partnership was intended to contribute to safer workplaces, stronger institutions and improved protection for workers across the continent.
“We look forward to a partnership that delivers meaningful, lasting impact and is true to the values that have guided us for more than a century,” he said.
Founded in 1894, RMA provides workers’ compensation and social insurance services and says it has expanded beyond its original focus on the mining industry to serve a wider range of sectors.
“Our history has been defined by reinvention, which underscores our agility to continuously adapt to new risks, new industries and new expectations of what worker protection should deliver,” explained Shezi.
