Johannesburg – The Takata airbag recall is the largest vehicle safety recall in history, affecting vehicles across 34 brands.
Faulty airbags may deploy spontaneously and can cause serious injury and can even be life-threatening due to solid fragments being released when the airbag inflates.
The Automobile Association of South Africa (AA) on Friday, 10 July 2026, said nearly 1 500 motorists have already checked their vehicles through the “AA’s Takata Airbag Recall” campaign.
“Thank you to everyone who has taken the time to complete the check and put safety first,” the AA said in a notice, alerting motorists to the anomaly.
“Thanks to these checks, nearly 100 affected vehicles have already been identified through the AA’s Takata campaign.
“Behind every vehicle is a driver, a family and an opportunity to prevent a tragedy.”
The AA added: “If you’ve already checked your vehicle, thank you for helping us make South Africa’s roads safer.
“If you haven’t checked yet, we encourage you to do so today.”
The AA is offering two contact options to have your vehicle’s status checked:
- Call AA dedicated call centre number (0861 001 323) or;

The good news is that if your vehicle is affected, the airbag can be replaced free of charge.
