Scottburgh – Property sales have spiked across the KZN Mid-South Coast recently as retirees turn long-held holiday memories into a permanent lifestyle.

One local developer in Scottburgh said many buyers are choosing to live the holiday full-time as they return to a coastline they associate with family getaways and a strong sense of place.

“Many of the buyers we’re engaging with have indicated that they returned to the KZN Mid-South Coast because of childhood and family holidays which left a lasting impression,” said Barto van der Merwe, Managing Director of Renishaw Property Developments, a subsidiary of Crookes Brothers Limited.

“They now recognise the area has retained that relaxed coastal lifestyle they loved so much in their youth, but with far more investment opportunity and infrastructure to support more long-term residency.

“This investment is truly unlocking the region’s full economic potential while giving retirees a place to live their holiday.”

Spike in Scottburgh Property Sales

This shift is clearly reflected at Renishaw Hills in Scottburgh, a mature lifestyle estate which has seen a massive spike in demand over the past few months.

Van der Merwe confirms that 11 sales have been concluded since 1 April 2026, spanning across all product offerings in the estate.

This includes the sale of three 3-bedroom homes (priced from R2.84m to R3.83m), four 2-bedroom maisonettes (priced from R2.19m to R3.2m), three apartment units (priced from R1.63m to R1.8m), and a storage unit (priced at R292k).

More than 80% of Phase 7 has already sold out since launching last year, with planning underway for Phase 8, underscoring sustained demand for the development’s mix of lifestyle and investment appeal.

“These sales include a broad mix of buyers and property types, which is particularly encouraging,” said Van der Merwe.

“It speaks to the versatility of the estate and how it meets the needs of different retirement and lifestyle preferences.”

He said a key differentiator is the priority of natural space: “The intention has always been to preserve the natural environment and avoid overdevelopment, so residents can genuinely experience space and tranquillity.”

The Bigger Growth Story

Renishaw Hills is one component of the wider Renishaw Coastal Precinct, a 1 300-hectare mixed-use development that is steadily reshaping the region’s property landscape.

The precinct launched Restilridge Farm Estate in June, a farm-style lifestyle estate that has already attracted significant early interest.

Construction has also commenced on a new retail centre by Cubisol, marking another step toward a more self-sufficient coastal hub.

Future phases include additional residential estates, retail expansion, and lifestyle infrastructure, reinforcing long-term investor confidence in the area.

“Early investors have already seen property value growth of around 94% since 2016, and we believe this trajectory is continuing as lifestyle and infrastructure improvements come online,” said Van der Merwe.

“The momentum we’re seeing now is only expected to strengthen as Phase 8 and the broader precinct developments progress.”
