Johannesburg – Police in Gauteng have swooped on a house on the East Rand used by suspected cash-in-transit robbers, where they recovered seven rifles, one pistol and a hijacked BMW X5.
However, the suspects who are known to the police evaded arrest and remain on the run.
Police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe said: “Gauteng police, working closely with intelligence structures, detectives and the Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department, have been hot on the heels of a gang believed to be linked to a number of serious and violent crimes committed across the province”.
She said that, acting on intelligence, police swooped on a house in Daveyton yesterday evening, Wednesday, 22 July 2026.
“Upon searching the premises, police recovered seven rifles, one pistol, reflector jackets and a hijacked BMW X5,” Brigadier Mathe said.
“An overnight manhunt is currently underway to trace and arrest the known suspects who managed to evade arrest.”
Meanwhile, the Acting National Commissioner of the South African Police Service (SAPS), Lieutenant General Puleng Dimpane, has applauded members of the Gauteng SAPS and the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department for “intercepting a suspected cash-in-transit robbery gang before they could execute their criminal plans”.
Lieutenant General Dimpane added: “This intelligence-driven operation is a clear indication that the SAPS remains resolute in its mission to combat cash-in-transit robberies and other serious and violent crimes.
“We have made significant inroads in dismantling CIT syndicates, and we will continue to deal decisively with those who terrorise our communities and endanger the lives of innocent citizens.”
The Acting National Commissioner further warned criminals involved in cash-in-transit robberies that their days are numbered.
“Cash-in-transit robberies are highly organised and violent crimes that require a coordinated response from law enforcement,” she said.
“Our intelligence capabilities continue to improve, and we are closing in on those responsible.
“We will hunt them down, arrest them and ensure they face the full might of the law.”
Brigadier Mathe said Investigations were continuing.
