Kokstad – There has been heavy snowfall in Kokstad, Underberg, Matatiele, and Clifton, resulting in a truck getting stuck along the R617.
KwaZulu-Natal Transport and Human Settlements MEC Siboniso Duma said the overnight snowfall had resulted in the closure of some roads today, Monday 10 August 2026.
“Accordingly, we wish to inform motorists and the people of KwaZulu-Natal of the closure of some roads in Kokstad, Kingscot, and Underberg. R617 has been closed, and traffic is being redirected to R56,” MEC Duma said.
He said the Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) was already implementing the Snowfall Response Plan.
“RTI has reported that one truck is stuck on R617, Kingscot,” MEC Duma said.
“We are requesting motorists to delay their trips and members of the public to remain indoors, as prevention is better than cure.
“As we have stated in the past, our Snowfall Response plan involves removing snow before it could accumulate to more than 30 cm in depth.”
The South African Weather Service (SAWS) issued a Yellow Level 2 warning for disruptive snow in western KwaZulu-Natal, with light to moderate snowfall expected in the south-western parts of the province and on mountain peaks.
“Icy roads and poor visibility are likely, posing risks for motorists and livestock,” warned SAWS.
