Johannesburg – The widening probe into the tender shenanigans at the Tembisa Regional Tertiary Hospital has resulted in the arrest of a 37-year-old suspect at OR Tambo International Airport.
The suspect was arrested on Friday, 28 August 2026, by the # Hawks, who are probing serious corruption and looting scams at Tembisa Hospital that siphoned an estimated R2 billion.
The suspect is alleged to have been part of a complex multimillion-rand tender fraud in the Tembisa Hospital procurement process.
The allegations levelled against the suspect relate to fraud, corruption, forgery and/or uttering, contravention of the Public Finance Management Act (PFMA) and money laundering.
It is alleged that certain officials at the hospital colluded with service providers to exploit the Request for Quotations system for procurement transactions below the R500 000 threshold.
The Hawks explained that this approach was intentionally employed to circumvent the formal tender process.
The suspect is expected to appear in the Specialised Commercial Crimes Court sitting at the Palm Ridge Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 31 August 2026, facing charges related to fraud, corruption and money laundering.
