Durban – The Ministry of International Relations and Cooperation has moved to correct reports that said AmaZulu King Misuzulu kaZwelithi was not invited to the recent Southern African Development Community (SADC) summit and related events.
The SADC Summit was hosted in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) in August.
The King has reportedly expressed frustration at being sidelined from major events in the Zulu Nation, including the 46th SADC Summit.
King Misuzulu reportedly said he was upset that the South African government hosted a SADC meeting at the Durban International Convention Centre and did not invite him.
He was said to have even considered sending a traditional Zulu regiment to the venue to stop the summit.
The Zulu King has made his position clear: no major events in KwaZulu-Natal should take place without him being invited.
Commenting on the matter on Sunday, 6 September 2026, the department said the Ministry of International Relations and Cooperation said it noted comments attributed to King Misuzulu regarding an invitation to the SADC Summit.
“The Ministry confirms that an official invitation was duly extended to His Majesty, who was expected to attend the official banquet and the opening ceremony,” said Ministry spokesperson Chrispin Phiri.
“To resolve any misunderstanding, the Ministry will engage with the Private Office of the King to establish clarity on the matter.”
