Pretoria – Lieutenant General Shadrack Sibiya, who is being held at Kgosi Mampuru maximum security prison on charges of rape and sexual grooming of a minor, has resigned from the police.
The 59-year-old deputy national commissioner opted to resign while fighting for bail in the rape and grooming matter.
Announcing the disappointing end to a four-decade career, spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe said: “The South African Police Service (SAPS) confirms that Lieutenant General Shadrack Sibiya is no longer an employee of the service with effect from Monday, 12 October 2026”.
Brigadier Mathe said the disciplinary hearing against Lieutenant General Sibiya “sat this morning”, during which his legal representative tendered his resignation immediately after the disciplinary proceedings had commenced.
“As the former senior officer had an ongoing disciplinary case against him at the time of his resignation, his departure from the service is therefore regarded as a dishonourable discharge,” said Brigadier Mathe.
“The SAPS confirms that Lieutenant General Sibiya’s employment with the Service has been terminated with immediate effect.”
Sibiya was one of several persons that President Ramaphosa ordered to be further probed about possible involvement in criminal activities.
The President instructed this after he received a report from the ongoing Madlanga Commission.
The key allegations against Sibiya before the Madlanga Commission centred on claims that he abused his position within the police and interfered with sensitive criminal investigations.
He has denied the allegations and maintains he is the victim of a campaign against him.
