Cape Town – Happy Pay, one of Africa’s fastest-growing Buy Now, Pay Later (BNPL) platforms, has announced the public launch of its AI-powered performance media platform designed specifically to help retailers turn customer attention into measurable sales.
Happy Ads now link advertising costs directly to completed sales, and to date, has generated more than R100 million in merchant sales during its very first pilot.
The pilot resulted in more than 268 million impressions and a 20x average return on advertising spend.
This means that, on average, every R1 spent by merchants through the platform has generated R20 in sales.
Happy Ads enables brands to promote relevant products and offers to Happy Pay’s audience of more than 800 000 registered consumers and 2 million partner customers across its network, with 6 million more joining the network soon.
Unlike traditional digital advertising, where brands pay for impressions or clicks, Happy Ads operates on a cost-per-acquisition model.
Retailers determine the commission they are willing to pay and are charged only when a campaign results in a completed sale.
“Most digital advertising platforms sell attention and leave retailers hoping that attention eventually turns into revenue,” said Wesley Billett, co-founder and CEO of Happy Pay.
“Happy Ads flips that model. If we don’t generate a sale, the merchant doesn’t pay.
“The fact that we have already generated more than R100 million in sales during our pilot shows just how powerful that proposition can be.”
Happy Ads combines product discovery, targeted distribution, payments and transaction-level attribution within a single platform.
Discovery is powered by an AI recommendation engine that ranks products for each shopper based on their browsing, purchase history, and interests.
Every completed sale feeds back into the model, sharpening who sees what and helping merchants sell more.
Shoppers can then check out with Happy Pay’s interest-free options or any of the retailer’s existing payment methods, giving retailers more chances to convert.
“Happy Pay has a combination that most advertising platforms do not: high-intent consumers, thousands of merchant relationships and visibility through to the final transaction,” Billett added.
“That allows us to connect the right customer with the right product, give them a better way to pay and show the retailer exactly what the campaign delivered.”
Steve Smith, the Executive Head of Revenue Growth at Zapper, confirms the value being driven: “The Happy Ads API powers our Zapper Shop.
“Integration was seamless, giving our users a new way to shop within the app and generating revenue for us from day one.”
The launch forms part of Happy Pay’s broader vision of building an Ad-Subsidised Payments network.
Rather than generating revenue by charging consumers interest, Happy Pay is funded by the merchants that benefit from the payments and sales the platform facilitates.
By adding an advertising business to its payment network, Happy Pay can help retailers acquire customers and increase sales while continuing to offer consumers flexible payment options without interest or hidden fees.
“Buy Now Pay Later should be more than a payment button at checkout,” said Billett.
“It creates one of the most powerful customer-acquisition flywheels in retail.
“Happy Ads turns that distribution into a measurable growth engine for merchants and helps us build a more sustainable, consumer-friendly payments business.”
For retailers, Happy Ads provides access to a large and growing audience of high-intent shoppers without the upfront risk associated with traditional media buying.
Campaigns are distributed across Happy Pay-owned and partner channels, with reporting that tracks impressions, engagement, conversions, sales and return on advertising spend.
“South African retailers are under pressure to make every marketing Rand work harder,” Billett said.
“Happy Ads gives them a simple proposition: we only win when they do.
“We don’t want to be just another payment provider or advertising platform-we want to be a genuine growth partner to our merchants.”
Happy Ads is now available to retailers and brands across South Africa, and integrates directly into audience owners’ existing platforms, enabling banks, telcos and fintechs to add shopping functionality to their apps, monetise audience attention and unlock new revenue streams.
