New York – The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), an independent, nonprofit organisation that promotes press freedom worldwide, has announced the appointment of Alice Gardoll as Chief of Staff.
In this role, Gardoll will support CPJ Chief Executive Officer Jodie Ginsberg to ensure that press freedom remains at the forefront of the global political agenda.
“Alice possesses a rare combination of high-level executive expertise and a profound dedication to human rights and journalist safety,” CPJ CEO Jodie Ginsberg said on Monday, 2 November 2026.
“In an age of growing autocracy and information overwhelm, having access to credible independent information is more vital than ever, and Alice will help reinforce CPJ’s operational strength and leadership capability so we can meet this critical moment head-on.”
Gardoll brings extensive executive leadership and international legal expertise to CPJ, having spent her career working in advocacy and defending victims of human rights abuses and asylum seekers.
A lawyer by training, Gardoll joins CPJ from the Clooney Foundation for Justice, an organisation dedicated to press freedom and human rights, where she served most recently as Director of Legal Strategy and Impact and previously as Chief of Staff to Amal Clooney.
Commenting on her appointment, Gardoll said: “It is a privilege to be joining the brilliant team at CPJ, whose rigor and courage I have long admired.
“Journalists around the world are under attack, and those who fight for them operate in increasingly hostile conditions.
“I am proud to support CPJ’s essential work and Jodie’s leadership at such an urgent moment.”
