Polokwane – The Polokwane High Court has sentenced Gareth Alexander Potgieter and Wynand Carel Steyn to life in prison for the murder of 43-year-old Hendrik Stephanus Venter in the Waterberg District, Limpopo.
The high court heard that on 20 August 2021, Northam Police Station was notified that Venter was missing.
During July 2022, information was confirmed that the missing person had been murdered, dismembered, and burned.
Venter’s remains were discarded along the De Put gravel road in the Northam policing area.
During the investigation, human ribs, vertebrae, as well as the deceased’s ring were recovered.
A sink basin, which was later confirmed to contain DNA from the deceased, was also seized together with a saw, an axe and an electric wood saw.
Police investigating the matter identified both murder suspects and proceeded to search for them.
Thirty-eight-year-old Gareth Alexander Potgieter was located in Bloemfontein in the Free State, where he was arrested.
His accomplice of the same age, Wynand Carel Steyn, was already in custody as a suspect in a copper-related theft case.
Investigating Officer Captain Piet Du Plessis, attached to the Northam Detectives Unit, successfully opposed releasing the accused on bail, and they were tried and found guilty of murder and defeating the ends of justice.
On Friday, 6 November 2026, the High Court sentenced the pair, Potgieter and Carel Steyn, to life in prison for Venter’s murder.
The accused were also slapped with a five-year sentence for defeating the ends of justice.
However, both the sentences will run concurrently.
Police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba said the Provincial Commissioner of Police in Limpopo, Lieutenant General Jan Scheepers, welcomed the conviction and sentencing.
Lieutenant General Scheepers said justice has been served and closure for the family had finally been achieved.
He also commended Captain Du Plessis for his meticulous investigation.
