Durban – A minibus taxi driver, who was inexplicably driving toward on-coming traffic on a freeway in the fast lane, died in a head-on collision with a bakkie on the N3 Pietermaritzburg-bound, near BP Oasis.

ALS Paramedics spokesperson Garrith Jamieson said the deadly collision near Cato Ridge occurred just before 11pm on Saturday, 13 March 2026.

Jamieson said when paramedics arrived on the scene, they found that a minibus taxi, thought to have been driving contraflow in the fast lane, had collided head-on with a bakkie.

“Paramedics quickly assessed the scene and found both drivers entrapped in the wreckage,” the ALS Paramedics spokesperson said.

The Ethekweni Fire Department was dispatched to assist.

“The taxi driver, a male believed to be in his 30s, had sustained fatal injuries, and unfortunately, there was nothing paramedics could do for him; he was declared deceased on the scene,” Jamieson said.

“In the bakkie, the two occupants had sustained serious injuries, and whilst Advanced Life Support Paramedics worked to stabilise them, they were cut free from the wreckage by the Ethekweni Fire Department.

“Once freed, both patients were carefully extricated and loaded into awaiting ALS Paramedics ambulances and transported to a nearby hospital for further care that they required.”

Metro police and SA Police Service officers were in attendance.
