Johannesburg – At least 121 drivers have been arrested for drinking and driving in just two days.

Giving an update on traffic law enforcement during Easter, Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) Spokesperson Superintendent Xolani Fihla said the motorists were arrested in the “last 48 hours”.

“Our officers have been deployed at various strategic points to clamp down on driving under the influence,” said Superintendent Xolani Fihla on Saturday, 4 April 2026 .

The JMPD spokesperson said the following arrests were made over the last 48 hours:

* Thursday, 2 April 2026: 39 suspects arrested.
* Good Friday, 3 April 2026: 82 suspects arrested.

“A total of 121 motorists have been taken into custody for drinking and driving,” said Superintendent Fihla.

“We remind the public that there is no excuse for such behaviour, which places innocent lives at risk.

Superintendent Fihla said the JMPD is maintaining a high-visibility presence across the City of Johannesburg as part of our intensified Easter Safety Operations.

“While our primary goal is to ensure a safe holiday period for all, recent enforcement statistics highlight a persistent disregard for road safety by some motorists,” the spokesperson said.

“We remind the public that there is no excuse for such behaviour, which places innocent lives at risk.

“It is with great sadness that we confirm two fatalities recorded during the commencement of the Easter weekend.”

Superintendent Fihla said on Thursday, 2 April 2026, JMPD traffic officers attended to a fatal accident involving a pedestrian.

Yesterday, Good Friday, 3 April 2026, the JMPD reported a fatal accident in which a passenger died.

“The JMPD sends its heartfelt condolences to the families and loved ones of the deceased,” Superintendent Fihla said.

“As we move into the remainder of the long weekend, we urge all road users to exercise extreme caution.”

The JMPD reminded pedestrians to remain visible and use designated crossing points, while motorists must adhere to speed limits and avoid drinking alcohol before getting behind the wheel.

“Our operations will remain in full force across all regions to ensure the safety of our community,” Superintendent Fihla said.
