Jeppes Reef – A senior provincial traffic inspector, Sfiso Andries Lubisi, has been killed in a car crash along the N4 in Jeppes Reef, near Malelane, Mpumalanga.
The 39-year-old traffic inspector was travelling with two other colleagues when their car was involved in a multiple crash with an Audi SUV and a truck earlier today, Friday, 15 May 2026
Mpumalanga Spokesperson for the Community Safety, Security and Liaison, Moeti Mmusi, said another passenger and the driver were seriously hurt in the crash that occurred at about 07:00.
Unfortunately, traffic inspector Lubisi, attached to the Mpumalanga Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison, was certified dead on the scene.
The seriously hurt passenger and driver were taken to a private clinic, where they are receiving treatment.
Spokesperson Mmusi said a preliminary investigation confirmed that the Toyota Starlet, in which the deceased and his two colleagues were travelling, collided with another car and a truck.
Mmusi said: “Lubisi, who was a passenger in the sedan, was declared deceased at the scene.
“His two colleagues, the driver and passenger, sustained serious injuries and were taken to Medi-Clinic Mbombela for further medical care.”
However, the exact cause of the deadly collision was unclear and remains a subject of further probe by relevant authorities.
Commenting on the tragedy, Mpumalanga MEC for Community Safety, Security and Liaison Jackie Macie said: “This is a dark moment for law enforcement.
“It is especially painful because traffic law enforcement officers put their lives on the line daily to prevent deadly crashes, only for some to lose their lives on the road.
“We appeal to his peers not to be demotivated by this untimely loss, but to continue working to prevent crashes by enforcing the law.”
Macie conveyed sympathies to the grieving family and wished the survivors speedy recoveries.
