City Power said on Tuesday afternoon it had restored electricity supplies to some areas in Johannesburg South that had experienced a power outage after a fire at Robertsham substation.

“From morning teams worked hard to find alternatives to supply power while work to assess the damage and clean up the substation continues,” said City Power.

“We are happy to say that by 2 pm we had managed to backfeed and restore power to the areas that include: Ridgeway, parts of Ormonde, West Turfontein, Chrisville, Crown Garden and Robertsham.”

“Work is still continuing to try and backfeed the other areas that were affected by the fire.”

City Power added: “We are hoping that more areas will be restored by this evening, with the rest by Wednesday morning.”

“Investigations into the cause are still continuing.

The fire at the substation on Monday night affected several suburbs in the south of Johannesburg.

The affected suburbs include Robertsham, Booysens, Booysens Reserve, Crown Gardens, Ridgeway, part of Mondeo, Gillview, Glenada North, Ophirton, Evans Park, Ormonde, Winchester Hills, Southdale, Aeroton, Nasrec, and Chrisville

“We apologise to the customers affected,” said City Power, adding that the fire caused extensive damage to the infrastructure at the substation, including the two main transformers.
