Johannesburg – The Special Investigating Unit (SIU) has secured a tribunal order to freeze businessman Thapelo Samuel Buthelezi’s upmarket property in Meyersdal Nature Estate, Alberton.
The SIU said the move follows an earlier freeze on his company’s farm in Parys.
The actions target the recovery of R532.8 million paid unlawfully by the Free State Department of Health to Buthelezi-linked firms for expired emergency medical services tenders from 2013 to 2017. ‘
A May 2025 tribunal ruling deemed the contracts unconstitutional and ordered repayment, but Buthelezi failed to comply, prompting contempt proceedings and asset preservation amid ongoing civil recovery efforts.
