Equatorial Guinea Beats Defending AFCON Champions Algeria 1-0

Defending African champions Algeria got a shock on Sunday night when minnows Equatorial Guinea beat them 0-1 in an upset 2021 AFCON result.

Algeria’s record of 35 games without a loss ended in frustration in Douala.

Equatorial Guinea surprised the champions in the 70th minute when Algeria failed to clear from a corner and Esteban Orozco Fernández made no mistake.

The defending champions sit bottom of Group E and will need to win their last fixture against Ivory Coast to make it to the knockout stage.

In the earlier Group E fixture, Ivory Coast Goalkeeper Badra Ali Sangaré failed to handle a harmless-looking ball to gift Sierra Leone’s Alhaji Kamara a 95th-minute equaliser.

Sierra Leone’s dramatic late equaliser secured a 2-2 draw against Ivory Coast. Sierra Leone are proving to be the surprise package in their first AFCON in 26 years.

Ivory Coast’s Sébastien Haller opened the scoring. But 21-year-old Musa Kamara equalised for Sierra Leone, before Nicolas Pépé restored the Ivorians’ lead.

With the game all but won, Sangaré’s howler cost Ivory Coast the win, but they remain top of the group. The goalkeeper hurt himself in the process and couldn’t continue playing.

Having used all substitutes, Ivory Coast captain and defender Serge Aurier had to wear the gloves and play in goal for the remainder of the game.
