A man thought to be 40 years old died Monday morning when he crashed his sport utility vehicle (SUV) into a bridge pillar along the M4 near Umhlanga Rocks, Durban.

“Earlier this morning Emer-G-Med paramedics, together with Netcare911 and multiple other emergency services, responded to the Ruth First Highway, south at the Lighthouse Road bridge,” said Emer-G-Med.

“On arrival on scene an SUV was found to have crashed into the concrete support structure of the overhead bridge.

“A male motorist, believed to be approximately 40 years of age, was found severely entrapped in the wreckage with critical injuries.

“Advanced life support paramedics worked fervently to stabilise him whilst he was cut free using the Jaws of Life.”

Emer-G-Med said reports from the scene are that the man went into a state of cardiac arrest shortly after he was extricated and despite extensive resuscitation efforts, he was declared dead on the scene.
