Two men died and a three-year-old boy had to be airlifted after a minibus taxi crashed into a bridge pillar along the N3, near the M1 interchange in Johannesburg,

Emer-G-Med said the tragedy occurred on Friday afternoon.

When paramedics arrived they found a Toyota HiAce minibus taxi had crashed into the bridge.

Emer-G-Med said on closer inspection, paramedics “found the driver, and a passenger, both males aged approximately 40 years old, to have sustained fatal injuries and they were declared dead.”

Emer-G-Med added: “A three-year-old boy was found in a critical condition and several advanced life support interventions were needed to stabilise him before he was airlifted with the assistance of the Netcare911 aeromedical helicopter to a specialist facility for the definitive care that he required.”

Several other commuters suffered moderate injuries and were treated and transported by ambulances to nearby hospitals for further medical care.

“Traffic in the area was severely affected as the roadway was closed to allow for the helicopter to land and evacuate the injured,” said Emer-G-Med.
