Pretoria – SA Police on Wednesday afternoon arrested a 69-year-old man at OR Tambo International Airport after he was caught trying to smuggle illicit drugs to India.
He was caught as he attempted to board a flight to India with contraband worth more than one million rand in his bag.
“An intelligence-driven operation has yielded desired results when police arrested a 69-year-old foreign national,” said Lieutenant Colonel Robert Netshiunda in a terse statement.
“Counter Narcotics Intelligence Head Office, Organised Crime Narcotics Head Office, and K9 Unit West Rand operationalised intelligence information and intercepted the suspect as he attempted to board a flight destined for India.
“The elderly man was found in possession of 8 Kilograms of pure heroin worth a street value of approximately R1 216 000 concealed in his travelling bag.”
The suspect will appear before the Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court on Friday, 14 October 2022, on charges of possession and dealing drugs.
